Mexico is the destination for nature- and culture- lovers. Regarding nature, Mexico is one of the most diverse countries in the world with an important biodiversity. Because of its size and location, Mexico has many different types of environments: from deserts to rain forests, mountains to plains, and lakes to beaches, which make a holiday in Mexico special and distinct. Mexico is also a country of many ancient cultures like the famous Maya, the Zapotecs, and the Aztecs. These cultures are still recognisable in Mexico’s landscape, people and their customs, music, art, and the famous cuisine. The variety of natural beauty of the country makes Mexico an attractive destination.
Oaxaca and Chiapas
We focus on two states in the south of Mexico: Oaxaca and Chiapas. These states differ from the rest of Mexico because of their richness of culture and nature and because they are known for their friendly inhabitants. These special states have their own unique character and possess many authentic and pure places which are developed but not yet visited by many tourists.
Culture, land of the Zapotecs, ancient cities and temples, well-known Mexican cuisine, friendly cities and traditional villages, art, mountains and plains, traditional festivals, ecotourism, long beaches and virgin bays, surfers’ paradise, lagoons and mangroves, diving, dolphins, diversity of birds, crocodiles, turtles, and whales.
Oaxaca honours their cultural traditions which give the state a unique character. This is reflected in the way the people think, the influence of religion, the many traditional celebrations, the history, the art, the famous Mexican cuisine, and the indigenous languages that are still spoken in many villages. Next to the official language, Spanish, 40 indigenous languages are spoken. Oaxaca´s richness of culture is a result of the many different ethnic groups that have lived and still live in this one state; for example, the Zapotecs, the Mixtecs, and 14 other ethnic groups. The meal called la comida plays an important role in the daily family life of Oaxaca. Oaxaca is where the famous Mexican food is still made according to traditional recipes.
Oaxaca de Juárez is the capital of the state of Oaxaca and is a colourful colonial city with a compact city centre with many small shops, traditional markets, and restaurants. The city centre of Oaxaca is on the UNESCO´s World Heritage List as a protected site. Oaxaca´s beauty makes it loved by many artists and, therefore, art is everywhere to see. The city is surrounded by many different chains of mountains. In the valley, outside Oaxaca de Juárez, are various villages where the people dedicate themselves to farming and making different handicrafts which are worthwhile to visit. Alebrijes, black, red, and green pottery, and woven rugs are examples of handicrafts.
